BSN HyperFX Review

 Background
HYPERFX is a pre-workout product of popular supplement brand BSN and is “the first Effervescent Extreme Concentrated Energy & Power Amplifier of its kind.” BSN was founded in 2001 and since their launch they have become the world leader in sports nutrition products. My fiancé has been using their products on and off for as long as I have known him and for some time before.
Flavors & Servings

HYPERFX product comes in 3 flavors: Grape, Blue Raz and Watermelon. I have yet to try the Grape but have had both the Blue Raz and the Watermelon flavors. All sizes come in a jar that provides 30 standard servings, if you are like me and have a bit of a stimulant sensitivity you may only need half of a serving thus increasing your serving count to 60. Typically I try to only take ½ to ¾ of a serving but for the sake of this review I took the entire full serving of Watermelon HYPERFX. I usually tend to crash from products that produce high levels of energy; I am pretty thin so it does not take very long for the products to kick in. I am a young woman standing at 5’8”, a 130lbs Ectomorph (which is basically a fancy term for being naturally skinny) with about 14% body fat. My fitness focus is gaining muscle mass so having the right products that can help me towards those goals is key.
Taste
The flavor was pretty good but it had a bit of an odd after taste; there is Red Pepper and Black Pepper listed in the ingredients so that explains the aftertaste. I am sure the reason they added peppers is because pepper can aid in speeding of your metabolism. Black Pepper can also increase body heat which can give you that ‘pumped up’ feeling in addition to the Taurine and Caffeine. The pepper after taste and the fizz can take some getting used to; I was not very fond of the fizzy aspect to it, I kind of felt like drinking a weird soda with an oddly low level of carbonation.  The first time I tried to take HYPERFX my lips started burning a bit, this time I had no issues with burning which was a nice surprise.
Ingredients & Effects
HYPERFX is definitely different than some other pre-workout products I have used in the past. Mainly because it contains Magnesium Oxide which makes the product fizz once it comes in contact with water. This is the reason it says “WHILE MIXING HYPERFX DO NOT SHAKE! STIR POWDER WITH A UTENSIL” on the container. Magnesium Oxide is extremely similar to Alka-Seltzer, it has the same effect of that childhood science experiment where you add baking soda to vinegar and watch it bubble and overflow but on a much smaller scale. Since this product cannot be shaken I had to slowly invert and roll my water bottle, I like to mix my pre-workout in bottle because chances are I am drinking it on my way to the gym or in the parking lot.
HYPERFX also highlights containing D-Aspartic Acid an endogenous amino acid that can be found between the nervous system and the hormones of the endocrine glands. This ingredient is known to aid in increasing testosterone levels which are needed to build muscle. It also helps produce the growth hormone that makes the muscle fibers your building muscles grow bigger.
HYPERFX’s main focus points are energy, focus, endurance and power. The energy to get you motivated to work out, a lot of times people just do not have the desire to get up and go work out. Pre-workout is a great way to get someone excited about working out. I did the stair master for 5 minutes prior to my workout to warm-up and help the HYPERFX kick in and I could definitely feel the difference afterwards. I often feel stronger when I take a pre-workout, I feel that it helps push me to try and lift heavier than the last workout. You do have to be careful and listen to your body because pre-workout can make you feel somewhat invincible so I had to make sure I did not injure myself due to excessive energy.
How to Use
To take HYPERFX you add one scoop to 3-6oz of water and stir 30-45 minutes on an empty stomach before your workout. I like to use 8oz of water, I find that using less water makes the flavor more concentrated and I may not have been able to take the full serving with less water. I took mine closer to 15-20 minutes before my work out after eating; it does not take long for stimulants to work on me so I find that I do not have to take my pre-workout too long before I actually start my workout.
Mix Ability
Like I said before it starts to fizz once it comes in contact with water so I had to make sure to put the top back on my bottle before the product literally overflowed from the bottle. The mix ability was OK, most of the product dissolved with no issues once I started rolling and inverting my bottle. However; there were remnants of the HYPERFX powder that did not dissolve into the water so I had powder settling at the bottom of the bottle which was most likely the peppers. I am not a fan of grit so I ended up rinsing the product that did not dissolve out of my bottle because I know I was not going to be able to make myself drink it.
Pros & Cons
Pros:
  • Fast working
  • Energy
  • Endurance
  • Long Lasting

Cons:
  • Unpleasant Aftertaste
  • Little muscle pump
  • Long lasting; if you are not going to do a strenuous workout for more than an hour you may be restless and/or have the jitters
  • May cause mouth/lips to burn/itch

Other Reviewers
Some HYPERFX reviewers said they experienced a ‘tingling’ sensation after taking the product. I experienced a bit of tingles but since I ate before I took HYPERFX it was barely noticeable, if I was not paying attention to it I probably would not have noticed it. It may be due to the fact that I ate prior to consuming HYPERFX.
Crash
I am not sure if there was crashed from HYPERFX, I usually workout at night so once the product wears off I am getting ready to fall asleep anyways. I did notice a loss of appetite after my workout; since I focus on weight lifting I am usually starving by the time I get home but this time I had zero appetite and I was supposed to eat dinner after my workout.

Rating
Overall I am not sure how likely I would be to recommend this product. If someone was asking about a Creatine free pre-workout supplement I would tell them about HYPERFX and suggest they sample the product prior to purchasing it. I would inform them of the cons I experienced but also remind them that everyone reacts differently to products so their experience may be different than mine. I do not know if I will use this product in the future; personally I feel I have gotten better workout results from different products. I would give this product 6.5 out of 10.
